Golden karateka rake in awards

The students at the Westville Karate Club snapped up a few of the top positions in the recent national championships.

AVID karateka from the Westville Karate Club raked in a slew of medals at the IFFSKSA 34th National Championship at UKZN’s Old Mutual Sports Centre recently.

There were more than 550 participants from around the country competing for gold medals in their divisions.

The club’s sensei, Brian Govender, congratulated Adam Harrichandparsad (kata – bronze), Noah Harrichandparsad (kata – bronze), Tarita Bodalia (Gold – kata and 2nd kumite), Monica Bodalia (kata – bronze), Ashley Thomas (gold kata and kumite), Yasthika (kata and kumite – gold), Michael Schwartz (kata – gold), Talin Bodalia (kumite – gold), Sejal Brijlal (kumite – silver), Vitara Ayer (kumite – silver), Junaya Moodley (kumite and kata – silver), Shaelin Perumal (kumite – silver), Neschlin Perumal (kumite – silver), Rehan Lalla (kumite – silver), Rishav lalla (kumite – bronze), Tezlin singh (kata – gold and kumite – silver) and Annabelle Govender (third for kata).

“I am very pleased with the performance of my students at this tournament. It has been a fantastic year for the Westville Karate Club as they have won medals at all of the tournaments they have competed in this year,” said a proud Brian.
