Kearsney scores another win

While the school's rugga team didn't claim a win at the penultimate 7s tournament, the soccer and indoor hockey teams nabbed top scores.

Soccer:

Kearsney College took on St Charles in a physical encounter at home on Saturday. Early on, Kearsney set into their passing game and tried to control possession against the much bigger St Charles team.

Kearsney opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, when Joshua Barrett made one of his search runs down the right flank and passed to Mzu Phike. He drilled his way into the St Charles penalty area and beat the goalkeeper with a fine close range shot.

St Charles almost equalised immediately after the restart, but a fine point-blank save by Jethro Strydom kept the score in Kearsney’s favour. The teams went into the break with a slender 1 – 0 advantage.

In the second half, Kearsney doubled their advantage when Fin McLean headed from outside the 18-yard area, lobbed over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. McLean, who was dominating the aerial battle, flicked on to Phike, whose first time effort found the back of the net.

Phike completed his hat-trick with a powerful long range shot from 20 metres out, capping a fine day for the Grade 12 learner playing in his final year for the 1st team.

Indoor hockey:

Kearsney played several indoor hockey fixtures last week. The school’s U16As beat Northwood U16As 4 – 2 and the Kearsney U14As beat Westville U14As 3 – 1 to win the indoor league, completing the indoor season unbeaten.
