Tennis stars hit up international tourney

Four players from Tennis+ in Hillcrest recently competed against tennis hotshots from across the globe in the ITF tournaments.

FOUR tennis hotshots from Hillcrest’s Tennis+, Kade Mindry, John Burchmore, Courtney Fyvie and Kiara Mackay competed in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Tournaments in Nairobi and Johannesburg.

The team was ecstatic as this was the first time they had travelled internationally for tennis. The team was accompanied by director and coach of Tennis+, Mark Vorwerk. All four players competed in the U18 ITF events.

1st tournament (Nairobi):

Kade reached the semi-finals in the singles and fought hard but lost in a tightly contested three-set match.

2nd tournament (Nairobi):

Courtney and Kiara played a great doubles game but lost in the quarterfinals. Kade partnered with a player from India for the boys’ doubles and reached the semi-finals.

3rd tournament (Johannesburg):

Kade reached the quarterfinals for both the singles and doubles.

Mark Vorwerk said, ”Each of the kids had to dig deep to adjust playing on clay for the first time. From different and inconsistent bounce of the ball, to getting used to the slippery surface underfoot, all added to the challenge. These four players were able to play and practice against other tennis players from so many different countries including Kenya, Burundi, India, China, Israel, New Zealand, USA, Cameroon, Botswana, Dubia and Russia. Our players got a good perspective of where they were at against international players. We were so proud of all four players’ achievements!”
