Local rugga makes his mark

Sbu Sangweni, one of Kearsney College's 1st XV players, was chosen to play for the SA Schools' rugby team.

THE Aon U18 International Series fixtures kicks off today with the SA Schools’ rugby team facing Wales  in Paarl.

The SA team will then play against France in the second round on Tuesday, 14 August at Stellenberg High in Durbanville and then against England next Saturday, 18 August at SACS in Newlands.

Kearsney College’s 1st XV player, Sbu Sangweni, was selected following the Craven Week trials in July and is one of six players selected from KwaZulu-Natal. The other players are from Glenwood (Lunga Ncube, Rynhardt Jonker and Thabiso Mdletse) and DHS (Celimpilo Gumede and Lwandile Menze).

Notable inclusions are local player Rynhardt Jonker, the son of referee Marius Jonker, and Brendan Venter, the son of former Springbok centre of the same name, who attends Paul Roos.

Western Province have 10 of the 30 players in the squad, Border have six players, the Free State has three, the Golden Lions and Blue Bulls two apiece and the Griffons, Pumas and Boland each have one player in the team.

Confirming the quality of rugby played at the Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, 12 players in the SA Schools squad played at this year’s festival held at Kearsney College at the start of the rugby season.

Friday, August 10 (at Boland Landbou):

2.15pm – England vs France
4pm – SA Schools vs Wales

Tuesday, August 14 (at Stellenberg):

2.15pm – Wales vs England
4pm – SA Schools vs France

Saturday, August 18 (at SACS):

12.15pm – France vs Wales
2.05pm – SA Schools vs England
