Reservoir Hills Rhinos are league winners

Months of practice have paid off for the Reservoir Hills Rhinos as they claimed a league win for their DSRU division.

THE Reservoir Hills Rhinos Rugby Club’s fairytale season continued as the team won the league title for the second time in the club’s 20-year history.

On Friday night, at a chilly Jonssons Kings Park, they methodically dismantled a dangerous Kwantu Spears side from KwaMashu in a CF Glew 5th Division game.

Going into the 2nd last game of the season, boasting an unbeaten record, the men in blue were eager to preserve that honour in the presence of their founder and Reservoir Hills sporting pioneer, Teddy Chetty.

“Starting the Rhinos from scratch 20 years ago with my son Vernon, we are honoured to stand on the brink of winning the title again. It is indeed an achievement and testament to the hard work of the current Rhinos management and players. I am truly thankful to all these dedicated people and sponsors for keeping the Rhinos dream alive,” said Chetty in an emotional speech before kickoff.

From the off, Kwantu punched holes in the Rhinos defence. Ashley Garrity, who stood in for regular flyhalf, Lerato Khuzwayo, took time to settle in. When the opportunity presented itself to put points in the board, he slotted in a penalty from 25 metres out.

The Rhinos went into the break with a 15 – 0 lead.

The increasing scoreline in the second half angered the men from KwaMashu. They were punished by the referee, Peter Botha, for poor discipline. This resulted in a yellow card.

Absorbing the pressure and counter attacking, the team knocked in a few well-worked tries in the last 20 minutes. The game ended with the Rhinos claiming a 36 – 0 victory.

The Rhinos’ last game of the season against the Queensburgh Raiders was called off as the Queensburgh outfit withdrew from the DRSU.
