Levi fuels his biking passion

The nine-year-old is currently gearing up for his big race at Thunda Valley next weekend.

DRUMMOND’S Levi Bekker (right)loves nothing more than climbing onto his bike after a long day of school and perfecting his skills.

The nine-year-old is currently in Grade 4 and is home-schooled by Katiyana Lassen-Hughes.

When not engrossed in his school books, he can be found training with Wyatt Avis, or his step dad, Brad Greger, and his little brother, Cody.

Testament to the amount of work he puts in, Levi recently competed in all four rounds of the Powasol EnduroX in the 65cc pro class.

The first round was held in Summerveld where he took second place. In round two he claimed the top spot at the South Coast Bike Festival and continued this winning streak in round three and four at the Royal Show.

His reason for the love of the sport is simple. “I can jump and can go really fast around corners. I love the extreme part of it,” he said.

He has been racing since he was four years old and is currently in first place in EnduroX, second in KZN regional motocross and first in KZN club motocross.

He also competes in cross country and was lucky enough to win some prize money for second place.

The latest race was in Eston which consisted of three 30km laps through bush, following the markers along the way.

“I was so excited about it,” said the confident rider who made sure to stretch the amount to last him an entire month, buying chips and ice creams and muesli.

Levi is currently gearing up for his next big race on 17 June, the motocross club race in Thunda Valley in Pietermaritzburg.

He trains every day with his father and sees Wyatt three times a week. During these three-hour sessions he focuses on jumping and technique, all so that he can maintain his top spot in the sport.

“I love riding. It’s my sport,” he said.
