Local coaches net phase 2 spot

The training was provided by top UK coaches, who imparted valuable information to help local teams flourish.

LOCAL referees and coaches honed their skills at Premier Skills, the global coach and referee development programme run by the Premier League and the British Council.

The return to Durban recently was to implement phase two of the course that provided intensive training for 38 grassroots soccer coaches and 24 new referees.Premier Skills uses football to develop a brighter future for young people around the world, drawing upon the global appeal of the Premier League and its expertise in delivering community programmes in the UK.

The course, hosted at Hoy Park, saw Premier Skills coaches provide training sessions and educational materials to participants who will then share the newly acquired skills in their own schools and communities.

The course in Durban was organised by the British Council, Premier League and SAFA and was led by Premier League coach educator Graham Robinson. He was supported by UK club coaches, Dave Lawrence from West Bromwich Albion F.C. and Alex Curran from Newcastle United F.C.

Local Premier Skills coach educator, Nomonde Mashabane, who completed the programme in 2015, is committed to the growth of women’s football locally and works to train new coaches in communities across South Africa.

She said, “I have loved being part of this programme! I have a real passion for women’s soccer and programmes such as Premier Skills expands the game, irrespective of gender, race or ability.”
