Kearsney hosts quality tennis

In an exciting final, Paul Roos proved to be too strong for Grey College, beating them by 6 matches to 0.

PAUL Roos from Stellenbosch won the weekend’s 23rd annual Kearsney Tennis Festival, beating Grey College from Bloemfontein six matches to 0.

The competitive team from Affies placed third, ahead of Pretoria Boys High, with all eight participating teams providing exciting, quality tennis during the three-day invitation festival.

The tournament was played on a round robin format. Despite a slightly late start on Saturday due to overnight rain, the weather was good, with the teams from Paul Roos, Grey College and Affies dominating the event.

Paul Roos won their pool after a hard-fought battle with Affies (Pretoria) by 5 matches to 4. Grey College were victorious in the other pool.

In the semi-finals Paul Roos beat Pretoria Boys High by 6 matches to 0 and Grey College beat Affies by 6 matches to 3.

In an exciting final, Paul Roos proved to be too strong for Grey College, beating them by 6 matches to 0. The standard of tennis in the final was extremely high and a lot closer than the score line suggests.

Other playoff results:

3/4 position: Affies beat Pretoria Boys High by 5 matches to 1

5/6 position: Selborne College (East London) beat Clifton by 5 matches to 1

7/8: Kearsney beat Rondebosch Boys High by 5 matches to 4

Festival organiser and Kearsney MIC of tennis, Anthony Willows, said the festival was an outstanding team event, which continued to attract top South African tennis-playing schools, thanks to on-going sponsorship from Seeff Properties, Sportsmans Warehouse, Wilson, Matchday performance drinks and Alpine Motors.
