Rhinos claim well-deserved win

The Reservoir Hills Rhinos took on the Burning Spears in their latest match.

THE Reservoir Hills Rhinos claimed another win at KP6 in the CF Glew 5th Division League fixture against their old foes, the Burning Spears, in the second game of the season.

The Spears placed the Rhinos under severe pressure in the first half, turning the ball over repeatedly and forcing errors with their rush defence. The Spears were in the lead with 12 – nil at half-time.

After a tough half-time team talk from coach Andrew Osborn, the boys dug deep and piled on the pressure in the scrums to force crucial turnovers. It was a monumental effort by returning Rhino, Lapzen Matsoso, who put in telling tackles in the middle of the field. This, with Dean Moneron and Elgin Hatting, the tables were turned.

Captain Lerato ‘Glass’ Khuzwayo was once again masterful at fly-half, dictating play when he had the opportunity. These plays, combined with the efforts of Siphamandla ‘Sky’ Tshabalala and Jonty Osborn, it sealed the game as bonus point tries were scored.

New recruits Solomzi Skiti, Lincoln Tshumba and Lucqmaan Mohammed once again fronted up admirably, proving that they have come a long way since January.

Chairman Niren ‘Mizzy’ Misra was encouraged by the Rhinos’ performance. He stressed, “It’s a work in progress. I am nonetheless impressed by the Rhinos’ ability to dig deep when it counted to grind out a win. This bodes well for the future, together with the commitment shown by the new players can only mean that the Rhinos are on the upward curve ”

Taking the lessons learnt from the loss to DUT, the Rhinos dug deep to claim the 27 – 15 bonus point win against the Spears.

The Rhinos’ next fixture is on Friday, 4 May from 7pm. They will take on Ogwini Bafana at MUT Umlazi.
