Westville edge Northwood in Caleb Carney inspired thriller

The game ended 4-3 to the hosts.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School’s 1st hockey team celebrated their first win of the season in a match filled with goals against Northwood in an end-to-end thriller.

The school’s director of hockey, Cameron Mackay, said the first half started at a good tempo with Westville starting the stronger, this pressure told as three minutes in, Caleb Carney broke the deadlock with an unstoppable backhand into the bottom right hand corner.

Westville continued to dominate the early phases and found themselves 2-0 up with a fantastic deflection by striker, Keegan Gibbon, who won his 50th cap on the day. Northwood broke back after going 2 goals down and managed to win themselves two penalty corners.

Northwood got themselves on the score sheet with a fortuitous deflection from a Westville stick ending up in the back of the goals.

Westville came back after the goal with intent and managed to grab a third through Caleb Carney once again with a fantastic forehand finish to take them 3-1.

Westville were twice reduced to 10 men with green card’s going to Luke Allen and Hastin Naidoo, but managed to weather the storm and take their 3-1 lead into the break.

The second half started with an early booking to Joshua Korte once again reducing the home side to 10.

Both teams had control for periods of the game in the second half but Westville were creating more chances and missed a few opportunities the would have been disappointed not to take and end the game as a contest although Northwood goalkeeper, Taine Bird, was making it difficult for them.

Northwood hit back to make it 3-2 after an awful error at the back led to a soft shot deceiving the goalkeeper to nestle in the bottom corner. With 12 minutes left on the clock Westville broke back to find their fourth with a far post tap in by Caleb Carney, who sealed his hattrick.

Westville weathered the storm in the last few minutes with Northwood having more possession and becoming more attacking and aggressive going forward, Westville coped with the onslaught and counterattacked well through Hastin Naidoo, who was fouled by the goalkeeper and a stroke was awarded.

Caleb Carney stepped up to make it four goals on the day but his weak effort was saved by the Northwood Number 1. The game ended 4-3 to the hosts.
