Father, son duo lead the charge

Sailors will tackle the fun-filled 9-Hour event at the Henley Midmar Yacht Club this weekend.

POINT Yacht Club had a bustling weekend with the Holburn Class Champs in the bay on Saturday and the long-haul race concluded with day two of the Sigma Series offshore on Sunday.

A diminished fleet of only four Lasers joined forces with four Flying Fifteens in the second day of the Holburn Class Champs.

Jan Larkens took the win in the first of three races. He snatched the win by mere seconds over Rowen Clark.

In the second race, Jan hit a sand bank and was forced to climb off his dinghy to push start himself from being wedged. He earned a ‘disqualified’ on his race card. Jerome McLoughlin took the win and Rowen claimed another second place, followed by Richard Bate.

Richard crossed the finish line but had damage to the block for his main sheet and was forced to manually hold the boom. For the final race for the day, race officer Kevin Bingham, set a short, sharp sprint up the Maydon Wharf channel.

Eager Laser sailor, Jan jumped the gun by a minute ahead of the rest of the fleet and ploughed his way up the channel and disappointingly, not bothering to go through the finish when he realised his mistake.

First across the line, was Jerome who finished 24 seconds ahead of Rowen, who notched up his third second place for the day.

In the Flying Fifteens, veteran FF sailor and Highway resident, Patrick Harris, joined forces with his son, Liam and took line honours in all three races.

Pushing them hard for all three races, were visiting sailors, Rob Tarboton from Henley Midmar Yacht Club, sailing with his son, Andrew who was visiting from the UK.

The Harris combo were six seconds ahead of Tarboton in the first race, 14 seconds in the second race and in the final sprint up the channel, 29 seconds ahead.

For third and fourth, there was a bit of a tussle between sailing pair, Craig Campbell and Nhlanhla Phakathi and Campbell Alexander and Jeremy Kriek.

Craig and Nhlanhla took bronze in the first and second race.

In the second race of the Sigma Series, that wrapped up on Sunday, the impressive Argo FY, helmed by Craig Millar, snuck away from its nemesis, the larger CFM.

The fleet of 12 yachts were sent off by race officer, Tony Hardy to Coopers Lighthouse on the Bluff for a long-haul race.
