Slam dunk for Kearsney boys

Kearsney gave one of their best performances of the season in this match and showed how far they have come as a team.

THE big Highway clash of the weekend was between Kearsney and Westville Boys’ High. The two school’s basketball fixtures have produced some epic confrontations in the past couple of years.

This week both teams had injured players.

Westville opened the scoring with a layup and a free throw, putting them three points ahead on the score board. These were their final points for the quarter, which saw Kearsney play sublimely, scoring 18 unanswered points. The game was over by half time with Kearsney racking up a 42-12 lead.

Kearsney played poorly in the third quarter as a number of bench players were given a chance to play and a few starters were played out of position as the coaches tried different combinations. To their credit, Westville continued playing hard and were able to score 20 points in the third quarter. But they were not able to stop Kearsney scoring 21 to maintain a 30-point lead.

The fourth quarter saw the fight go out of the Westville players as Kearsney outscored them 22-11. Kearsney gave one of their best performance of the season in this match and showed how far they have come as a team.

Kearsney won 74-44.

Cricket

Kearsney College’s weekend cricket match against Westville Boys’ High School was washed out due to rain. There were, however, several weekday fixtures.

Kearsney 1st X1 played Thomas More 1st XI (T20 Big Bash) on Tuesday, 30 January. Kearsney scored 167/3 (Gouveia 50; Uys 38), Thomas More scored 138/8. Kearsney won by 29 runs.

In the Momentum Friendship matches on Wednesday, 31 January – 1st Kearsney scored 182/2 (Koenig 71 n.o.; Muirhead 51 n.o.), 1st Chatsworth Hub scored 132 /10. Kearsney won by 50 runs.

In the T20 Coastal semi-finals, Clifton 1st XI scored 146 all out, Kearsney 1st XI scored 91 /10. Kearsney lost by 55 runs.

Swimming

Kearsney travelled to Gauteng at the weekend for the annual Alan Burt relay gala hosted by KES, placing 6th out of 10 schools, with Westville, St Davids and Pretoria Boys High coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The Kearsney team performed well, with Josh Muller swimming the 50m freestyle in a personal best time of 24.8s.

Kearsney also took part in the annual Dimont Co-Ed gala, traditionally held at Alex Baths Pool in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday. The A-team linked up with the girls’ team from St John’s, Kearsney’s B-team paired with Epworth and Kearsney’s C-Team linked with St Mary’s.

Kearsney had stiff competition from the Hilton /DGC combination, but were able to eventually win the gala for the third year in a row.
