WBHS enjoys perfect sports weekend

Westville Boys' High School beat Maritzburg College in cricket, water polo, squash and basketball.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School recorded a perfect opening sporting weekend, beating Maritzburg College 1st teams in cricket, water polo and basketball.

The 1st team cricket put on a clinical performance to beat College by 27 runs, with SA High Performance player and captain taking 5/35.

Cameron Best and Roman Dindi combined scored 36 of the 54 baskets on the basketball court, with WBHS beating College 54-47 and in the pool, beating College in water polo by 11-8. The 1st team squash also took to the courts beating College 24-6.

Waterpolo
The first water polo game is always a good competition and College scored first to get the scoreboard ticking. The game remained close until the second period where WBHS outscored College 4-1 to go into half time 6-3 up. The third period saw WBHS superior swimming abilities put to good use with some good counter attacks resulting in another four goals while college replied with another two.

The fourth period saw WBHS play the newly promoted U15s and they maintained the lead until two poor goalkeeping errors allowed College to win the period 2-1. WBHS won the game 11-8 but were always in control in this early season fixture.

Basketball
The 1st team basketball match saw Ayanda Schwarz winning the jump ball allowing the Griffins to go into offensive patterns at the start of the whistle. Romano Dindi opened the game with a 3-pointer. Both teams showed that they offensively strong but that their defense was still questionable at the start of the season. Regular rotations by the home team saw fresh legs and fresh ideas on the court. Westville went in to half time 29-21 up.

The third quarter saw College launch their offense and narrowly lose the quarter 15-16.

College were well aware that Westville was answering every basket scored and needed to close the gap. Cameron Best found his rhythm and was unstoppable on offense.

Jude Joseph controlled the tempo of the game well and allowed some easy plays to be executed. A big block by Cameron Best on an attempted dunk re-energised the crowd and the home team were ready to close the game off. Joshua Forsyth had an amazing fourth quarter and kept the scoreboard ticking for Westville. Westville held on and edged their opponents 54-47.

Cricket
On the cricket pitch, Maritzburg College won the toss and put WBHS into bat on an overcast morning.

Westville had an opening stand of 58 between B. McCabe and J. Viljoen in what was tough conditions to bat upfront, with both swing and seam movement from the College bowlers.

WBHS lost its 1st wicket of McCabe with the score of 58/1. J. Viljoen went out shortly after on a very hard fought and professionally played 48. Small partnerships followed with the innings being anchored by C. Pillay on an unbeaten 67*. Westville posted a total of 220 for 6 in their 50 overs.

Maritzburg College got their innings off to a slow start due to some awesome bowling by J. Cook and M. Pollard with the new ball. M Pollard stuck early with two wickets in successive deliveries, in this getting the College captain out 1st ball putting College on the back foot with the score on 16 for 2 after 5 overs. College did lose another wicket close after before a 53 run partnership between opener J Campbell and and no. 5 batsmen B Noble until an important wicket by spinner S. Rajakumar of B Noble with a score of 40 runs off 50 balls.

Regular intervals of wickets fell led by the Captain of the team M Pollard taking 5 for 35 in 10 overs, taking the last wicket of opening batsmen J Campbell of 86 and outstanding effort in the field giving WBHS a hard fought and well deserved 27-run victory over Maritzburg College.
