LEARN to fight like a girl with FLAG, a women-empowered self-defense organisation, that will host a self defense seminar for women on Saturday, 9 December in Hillcrest from 9am until noon.

The event will be held at the Seiwakal Hillcrest Dojo at The Colony at 3 Inanda Road and is set to complement the nation-wide 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

Between them, the daring duo have more than a dozen years of martial arts experience under their karate belts.

“By teaching women and girls the art of self-defense, we will be able to empower them mentally and physically to fend off potential offenders and help to mitigate the horror and humiliation of being raped and suffer severe duress and pain,” they said.

Self-defense seminars for women and girls are run from their centre in Hillcrest and the focus is also on education and empowerment.

“Our crime statistics are frightening and a woman is raped every 13 minutes, according to the 2016 half-year report. One in nine rapes goes unreported and this anomaly presents a horrifying statistic of one woman being raped every two minutes. There is also the danger and threat of grievous bodily harm, an average vehicle hijacking rate of 46 per day, with women as victims, and nine million cybercrime activities at the last count in 2015,” said Christine.

FLAG has a working partnership with the Jes Foord Foundation.
