Riders gear up for rhinos

Avid mountain bikers are urged to sign up for this annual anti-rhino poaching fund-raiser.

MORE than 70 mountain bike riders will saddle up for the 2017 edition of the uBhejane Xtreme MTB Challenge on Saturday, 9 December from Hillcrest to Hluhluwe in aid of Project Rhino KZN.

Last year’s participants raised more than R250 000 for the project that helps maintain the aerial support of the Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing (ZAP-Wing) to 26 game reserves in northern KZN.

The funds also help to provide anti-poaching training, resources to field rangers and game reserves as well and hostd community-based education and awareness initiatives.

The uBhejane Xtreme is a 340km journey from the Cadence Cycling Performance Centre in Hillcrest to Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe.

Alongside the full 340km, there is a 240km ride, a 100km and a 35km ride.

This year’s ride will see the return of two of the 2016 influential people with Sibusiso Vilane and Phil Liggett. These two, along with former Cell C Sharks and Springbok flyer Jeremy Thompson, will help promote the event.

Covering an event that spans nearly 400km of KwaZulu-Natal, Mark plans to increase numbers in the years to come.
