Growing Queensburgh dojo proud of achievers

Karate has taken Neeran to different parts of the world including France, India, Singapore, Malaysia and many other countries.

SENSEI Neeran Ramcherron’s school of karate has grown since its inception in March this year.

The 34 year-old husband and father of two girls has been training in karate since 1985, when he was just three years old.

The Bellair resident and black belt holder is a trainer in Shotokan karate which is empty hand karate that trains the body to be a weapon.

Even though the Queensburgh dojo (training class) started months ago, he has been training students since 2000.

He now has almost 20 students in his Queensburgh classes.

Most promising students with their trophies, Mary Lichtenstein, Caleb Andrew, Shayur Soudamma, Jason Field, Darrian Pillay and Neerika Ramcherron.

When he started in 1985, he was trained by Hanshi Sonny Pillay, now the president of SA karate.

“My dad was also into karate and he encouraged me to keep going. Karate teaches children discipline, gives them confidence, boosts self esteem and self defence skills as well on many healthy benefits,” he said.

Neeran regards himself to be a stern leader. “My daughter is also in one of my classes so I have to be firm as much as we are family in the dojo, there is teacher and student only,” he added.

Recently his students received grading certificates and ‘most promising’ trophies for 2017/2018.

The karate classes take place at the Malvern Library as well as at the Hillary Bowling Club during the week.
