Kearsney dashes College’s five-season win

Kearsney College will host the annual Independent Schools Basketball Tournament this Friday, 29 September to Monday, 2 October.

AFTER an extremely shaky start, Kearsney College managed a convincing 65-34 victory against Maritzburg College, the giants of KZN schools’ basketball, at the weekend.

Having not lost to Kearsney in five seasons, the College team was extremely confidant going into the game and started off strongly, as they sprang to an 18-2 lead.

Kearsney looked woeful, much to the dismay of the large home crowd.

After a time out and some stern words from the coach, Kearsney came to life and scored 10 quick points, to claw their way back.

Some good defence at this stage held College to their 18 points, not allowing them to gather momentum.

The first quarter ended with Kearsney trailing 12-18.

The second quarter saw Kearsney begin to establish their dominance with some good offence and equally tight defence.

The half time score reflected the swing of momentum with Kearsney up 28-24.

Kearsney continued to gather momentum and to dominate the game with good shooting and aggressive defence; eventually toppling their opponents 65-34 in what was an excellent team effort, with every member of the team making a contribution to the claim the win.

Top performers in the match:

Kearsney: L Don Jeany (22 points, 5 steals); L Turner (11 points, 7 rebounds); A Morakinyo (8 points); R Lenko, P Barr and P Steenkamp (6 points)
