Surfers hang ten for Lizzard Hurricane comp

Close to 70 surfers slipped into their wet suits to compete in the Wave Wizards Surf Club's at Bronze Beach recently.

AFTER a howling south easter, the Lizzard Hurricane Surf contest had a perfect start at Bronze Beach in uMhlanga with sizable four to six foot waves that local surfer, Gaby Herbst, took advantage of and let her snap up top title for the U12 side.

Nearly 70 surfers suited up to take part in the 28 heats that ran throughout the day.

In the open men’s division, Justin Sykes, opened up with a high score of 7.5, beating his rivals Kyle Lane, Matt Kruger and Nathan Wallace.

In the competitive masters division it was series leader, Carl Roux, who took top honors again with a heat total of 9.5. Local surfer Jaime Irvine got victory in the low scoring U18 boys final.

Westbrook Surfer, Gabi Lailvaux, opted to surf out at the backline to secure her win, while her opponents Gaby Herbst, Kirra Attfield, and Maya Potgieter preferred the bowl wave on the inside.

Gaby Herbst was the decisive winner in the U12 girls’ event.

The runaway winner was Thor Knutsen, son of the three-time world champion surfer, Chris Knutsen.

Jestyn Viljoen, the club’s chairman, said, “I would just like to thank Anthony Molgowa and his team of lifeguards for always making us feel welcome and being so helpful. Thanks to Lizzard and Hurricane Surf for the great prizes and continued support and to all the parents, family and surfers for supporting our great Wave Wizards Club.”
