VAUGHN Preston, a multi-discipline cyclist and Grade 3 learner at Hillcrest Primary School, recently won the KZN Downhill and the Enduro Series. He also took first place in the KZN Enduro Champs and second place in the KZN Downhill Champs.
Earlier this month, Vaughn participated in the SA CUP Downhill series and was placed first at Cascades in Pietermaritzburg. His hero is local superstar, Greg Minaar, and when Vaughn “grows up” he hopes to ride and own a bike shop, just like Greg. Having been able to pedal a bicycle from the age of two, he has always had a natural talent for riding.
While mountain biking is his passion, he also competes in BMX races where he is currently ranked second in South Africa in his age group. He recently won two gold medals in the KZN BMX Series at Giba Gorge. Vaughn is looking forward to competing in the upcoming Spur Schools MTB League and is hoping to bring home a few medals for the Hillcrest Primary School team.
A natural all-rounder, Vaughn loves all sports and played for both the A-side cricket and rugby teams at his school this year and is a regular participant in hockey, soccer and loves athletics. He was recently placed second in the shot put event. While his sport keeps him busy, he still produces a pleasing set of academic results.
