Kearsney rounds up weekend sports

Exciting news from Kearsney College: 1st XV captain, Dylan Richardson, was selected for the SA Schools team, following the Craven Week rugby week held during the holidays.

KEARSNEY College enjoyed another action-packed weekend of sports – soccer against St Charles, the Sevens Rugby tournament, indoor hockey against DHS, and the mountain bike league.

Soccer
Kearsney 1st soccer team played St Charles in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday in dry and hot conditions, with both teams battling for midfield dominance. The opening goal was scored by St Charles after Kearsney failed to clear their lines from a corner set piece. Kearsney had some good opportunities to go level but failed to take their chances. The equaliser came in the second half when Luke de Vleig latched on to a through ball and volleyed it with his left foot into the net. Kearsney then pressed for the winner and it came 10 minutes from time, when Jordan Kellaway volleyed home at the back post from a corner.

Kearsney defended well at the end to shut out St Charles, with Kuhle Bophela making some good tackles at the back.

Kearsney beat St Charles 2-1.

Sevens Rugby
Kearsney came second in their first Sevens Rugby tournament of the season, hosted by Crawford College La Lucia. Sixteen teams participated.

In the opening match against Westville, Kearsney managed a gutsy 14-14 draw, which meant that they needed a superior points difference to Westville to qualify top of the pool.

In the following group encounter Kearsney beat South Coast Invitational 43-5; and then in the last group match was against Redhill from Gauteng.

Westville managed to beat South Coast Invitational 64-0. This meant that Kearsney had to beat Redhill by 47 points to end top of their group and qualify for the cup semi-finals. The Kearsney team was incredibly disciplined and accurate in their approach and this resulted in a 50-0 victory over Redhill, with a last movement try by Scott Cousins in the corner. It was an exciting performance which Kearsney can be proud of.

In the semi-final against St Charles, Kearsney again showed great composure winning 31-7; but in the Cup final against DHS they couldn’t get over the final hurdle, losing 26-5.
