Bowlers rake in big bucks

With a cash prize of R9 000, lawn bowlers gave it their all in the recent Hillcrest Toyota Tournament.

THE Hillcrest Bowling Club successfully hosted the Hillcrest Toyota Tournament recently.

The tournament offers one of the highest prize money pools in KwaZulu-Natal, due to the enthusiastic support of title sponsor, Toyota.

The format was mixed trips and a field of 26 teams were in the hunt for the first prize of R9 000. There was plenty of competition as there were other cash prizes available.

The game of bowls has changed in recent years as the Australian open has prize money of R250 000 AUD (R2.5 million).

Bowls is no longer a game only for retired folk but a game for the young, that is also enjoyed by the elderly. It is now truly a game for all and is one sport for life.

The big winners were Roger Boulle, Gail Norton and Gerrie Botes, second place went to Ruaan Victor, Kobus Victor and Bev Malherbe while Russell Funnell, Matt Riggien and Rene Griesel took third place.

If you are interested in trying your hand at the game, the Hillcrest club offers free coaching on Friday afternoons.
