Villagers remain undefeated

The local outfit took on the Westivlle Old Boys in a weekend skirmish to raise much-needed funds for little Jaxon Bartman.

THE big day culminated in the highly anticipated clash between the Hillcrest Villagers 1st XV and the Westville Old Boys in front of a large crowd at Kearsney College.

It was a special moment as the teams ran out from a long tunnel of spectators.

The Villagers Old Boys team set the tone for some exciting rugby and the local 1st XV outfit got off to a fast start, scoring in the first two minutes with some sublime skill.

The team was shocked as its captain, Brian Lewis, was helped off the field due to an apparent head knock from the subsequent kick off.

Westville hit back hard and dominated both possession and territory for the first 30 minutes of the match, however the Villagers’ defense held firm, as has been its trademark throughout the season.

A brace of two late tries before half time, through some brilliant counterattacking, took the steam out the visitors and leaving the Villagers feeling more confident as they went into the second half.

The first 20 minutes of the second half produced more line breaks and tries from the Villagers’ team, but the continued pressure from the Westville outfit saw them breach the defense and crash over the line for a seven-pointer.

The heat of the day took its toll on the players in the final 20 minutes and both teams made a number of substitutions.

The final score was 42-7, ending in an undefeated league run for the Hillcrest Villagers.

The man of the match awards went to Stefan van der Westhuizen and Tommy Bezuidenhout, both making their long awaited returns from injury.

The team will take on Vryheid for the massive Dewar shield clash on Saturday.
