Tournament aims to develop young karatekas

The tournament arena was packed to capacity with the eager competitors awaiting to showcase their talent in their respective Kata and Kumite Divisions.

THE International Federation of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate South Africa (IFFSKSA) recently hosted its 25th South Coast Regional Development Championship at the Queensburgh Civic Hall on Sunday, 26 March.

The tournament arena was packed to capacity with the eager competitors awaiting to showcase their talent in their respective Kata and Kumite Divisions.

Founder, President and Chief Instructor Kyoshi Eric Govender 7th Dan expressed his delight at how this championship has transformed over the years from its year of inception.

This tournament was started in 1992 by Kyoshi Eric whose vision was to host a tournament to develop young karatekas to excel in this code of sport and align themselves to the World Karate Federation structures of competition.

The highlight of the championships was the Senior Males and Senior Females Divisions.

The winners in the male category were Sandesh Ramsaroop (1st Kata and 3rd Kumite), Warren Pillay (2nd Kata and 1st Kumite) and Ashlyn Pillay (3rd Kata and 2nd Kumite) while the winners in the female category was Walliyah Shaik (1st Kata and 2nd Kumite), Lauren Munsami (2nd Kata and1st Kumite) 3rd place was shared between Nikeisha Samlall for kumite and Thashnee Naidoo for kata.

IFFSKSA next major events are the 2017 Annual Friendship Championship at UKZN on 13 May and 33rd Annual National Championships at UKZN on 26 August.
