Local businesses and communities stand to benefit from the positive impact of this year’s Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Now celebrating its tenth year, the festival has developed into a well-organised event, attracting the country’s top schoolboy talent and thousands of supporters.

It has become regarded as one of the premier schoolboy rugby festivals in South Africa, and has had a tremendous benefit to businesses in the Durban region and the Highway area in particular.

This year, 10 of the 12 participating teams are from outside of KwaZulu-Natal.

Each team consists of up to 30 players and support staff, with some sides travelling with a head coach, assistant coach, fitness coach, manager, biokineticist and physiotherapist.

Many players also bring family and friends and about 15 000 spectators are expected to watch exciting running rugby at the festival.

This year teams include the powerhouse Monument from Krugersdorp, Boksburg’s Dr EG Jansen, HTS Middelburg and HoërskoolNoord-Kaap from Kimberley, as well as the strong Eastern Cape schools Selborne College (East London), Dale College (King William’s Town), Queen’s College (Queenstown) and HoërskoolFramesby(Port Elizabeth), together with local schools Glenwood and Kearsney.

Newcomers to the festival are Pretoria Boys High and HTS Drostdy from Worcester in the Boland.

Festival play days are Thursday 13, Saturday 15 and Monday 17, with kick-off at 9.30am each day.

A primary schools’ fixture between Highbury, Westville Senior Primary and Umhlali Prep against the KZNRU u13 Ibutho development team will take place at 8.30 each day.

Gate entrance to the festival is R20 per person, there is ample secure parking on campus.

Food and refreshment outlets as well as a KidZone will be available for those wanting to enjoy a day of entertaining rugby.
