Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club celebrate two pre-season wins

The Villagers will travel to Winterton to take on Drakensberg Rugby Club, for their final pre-season preparation this weekend.

LAND Rover Durban/Envirosan – Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club opened their pre-season with two successive and significant wins.

On Saturday, 4 March, the Villagers travelled to Harlequins Rugby Club in the Bluff, to compete in the Ronnie Van Rooyen Rugby Tournament. The tournament which has been running for many years, involves most of the Durban and Pietermaritzburg based premier and first division rugby clubs.

First-up, Villagers’ 2nd XV were up against College Rovers 3rd XV. Experimenting with various options and combinations, the upper -Highway visitors put on an impressive display, with a spectacular try feast, winning by an impressive 48-12.

In the last game of the day, first division Villagers’ 1st XV, were pitched against premier division outfit, Jaguars Rugby Club. What followed was a finely tuned and professionally executed “demotion act” by Villagers, which stunned most onlookers. A “try rout” saw the Villagers’ Lads unexpectedly winning the game, 53-12.

For Hillcrest’s victorious head coach, Mike de Kock, it was a day that proved that “hard work definitely pays off”. Furthermore, this was de Kock’s sides’ second “premier division scalp”, having also beaten Empangeni Rhinos at the end of the 2016 season in the Castle Jnr Murray Cup Knockout Final.

This coming weekend, Villagers travel to Winterton to take on Drakensberg Rugby Club, for their final pre-season preparation.
