Swimmers make a splash for charity

More than R2-million was raised for the registered charities at this year's Midmar Mile race.

A WESTVILLE husband and wife team made a big splash at this year’s Mdimar Mile race by raising R20 000 for a local empowerment initiative.

Sean and Alison Uys’s charity of choice was Singakwenza Charity, a non-profit organisation which aims to build sustainable early childhood education programmes in economically disadvantaged communities. “They educate carers and teachers on how to teach children under the age of four and swimmers raised more than R 282 000 for the charity and more than R2-million was raised overall for charity,” said Alison Uys.

To prepare for the race, Sean swam 3km a day, five times a week while Alison alternated between running and her time in the pool as she is also preparing for marathons.

The Uys family of four swam in this year’s event, including their six-year-old daughter, Sarah, who completed her first race and their son, Daniel, who finished his second Midmar Mile. “Sean and I weren’t nervous about our races or Daniel’s races, but were concerned about Sarah, even though we both swam next to her the whole way. She insisted she also wanted a medal. She is tiny and we knew she would be fine but still I stressed the whole 55 minutes,” smiled the doting mom.

“We would like to thank Beach and Bush Adventures, Westville SuperSPAR, the Durban Ski Boat Club and our family and friends for their support,” said Alison.
