Spartans win Hillcrest Villagers touch rugby tourney

Ultimately, each team won a prize, and everyone that came to play, or just watch, enjoyed a great day of touch rugby.

LAND Rover Durban-Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club, hosted its annual Bradcor Armature Winders touch rugby tournament on Saturday, at their home grounds at The Durban Shongweni Club.

Nineteen teams, made up of eight players each, competed fiercely for the sizeable cash prizes sponsored by Bradcor and the converted Richdens Super Spar sponsored the floating trophy.

There were also sponsored non-cash prizes. Get Fit Hillcrest sponsored Get fit challenges for the winning team and gym contracts.

The teams came from far and wide and boasted strange and innovative names such as The Drunk and Disorderly’s, Victorious Secrets, Strangers With Candy, Tagermeisters, and Shake and Bake.

The tournament also included a mixed lads and women’s category, and in so doing proved to be competitive with some amazing rugby flair and skills on show, from the women.

After a gruelling eight hours of pool games, sudden-death play-offs, knock-outs and finals, The Spartans emerged as the tournament winners, with The Underdogs winning the mixed category.

The Black Ferns finished in second place and The A Team took third place.

This year, organisers gave awards to the woman and man player of the tournament, sponsored by Durban Sky Dive Center giving each person a sky dive course and jump.

Villagers 1st XV head coach/tournament convener and long-serving Villagers ‘Clubman’, Mike de Kock, praised all the players, referees, first aid and spectators for their epic contribution that made the day successful.

Ultimately, each team won a prize, and everyone that came to play, or just watch, enjoyed a great day of touch rugby.

Villagers chairman, René Missen, thanked their loyal and generous sponsors, who made the tournament financially possible.
