Liz sets her sights on gold

The local athlete is set to compete at next year's World Athletics Championships and is determined to win a gold medal.

WINSTON Park resident, Liz Alexander, returned triumphant from the World Masters Athletics Champions held recently in Perth, Australia.

She won silver in the 800m and silver in the 400m 60 to 64 year old age group for women and broke the SA record in the 800m by four seconds and almost shaved off a full second from the SA record in the 400m.

Liz said, “A lot goes into preparing for World Champs. My coach, Vic Vaz, compiled a comprehensive training programme for me and it certainly paid off. Training with a good bunch of fellow athletes from Fast Feet Athletics Club also helped tremendously. My physio, Brent Grimsley, worked his magic to keep any injuries to a minimum.”

The South African team did exceptionally well and finished seventh overall with an impressive haul of 47 medals in total. The next World Athletics Championships will be in Malaga, Spain in 2017. Liz is will be going for gold and hopes to break the world record in the 800m, 60 to 64 year old age group. “I’ll have to run a 19 second split to give me an overall time of 2.32 minutes. I know I can do it, I just have to stay injury free,” said a determined Liz.
