Inaugural hockey tourney a huge hit

Parents, hockey enthusiasts and players flocked to the Westville Girls' High School astro turf for the first ever boys hockey tournament hosted by Westville Senior Primary School.

WESTVILLE Senior Primary School hosted its inaugural heritage sports festival at the weekend.

The aims and objectives were to promote boys hockey in the Pinetown and Highway area, to foster positive relations between local schools and expose players and pupils to other schools as well as to have fun.

The tournament saw 12 sides from 12 different schools in the Highway area take part. The tournament was split into two pools, based on ability and teams specific requests. Schools played each other once in their pool and the games lasted at least 30 minutes, with a five minute gap between games.

“The event was to promote hockey and Highway school’s sport. This is the first of many and we hope to expand upon this next year and include other sports. I would like to thank our sponsors CMH Honda Auto Pinetown, Grand Canyon Spur, Eldorado Spur, Navaho Springs Spur, Westville Girls’ High School for the use of its premises and Westville Boys’ High School for providing the umpires,” said Shaun Sanders, a hockey coach and teacher at Westville Senior Primary School.
