Kearsney’s U15 team wins Sevens Rugby tourney

Kearsney College celebrated a double win at the weekend - victors for the U15 Pioniers Sevens Rugby tournament and the 1st team soccer match against Michaelhouse.

KEARSNEY College participated in the annual Hoërskool Pionier 7s rugby tournament at the weekend with schools mostly from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

In the first game of the pool stages Kearsney beat Vryheid Landbou 17-14; then narrowly lost 22-19 to Heidelberg Volkskool. In the final pool match they lost to St Charles 12-7. Kearsney then played Benoni High School in the Bowl quarter final and convincingly won 40-7.

Both teams battled to gain ascendency in the semi-final between Kearsney and Bergvlam from Nelspruit. Ultimately Bergvlam managed to capitalise on Kearsney’s unforced errors and were the victors 29-19.

However, the U15 team turned things around for the school when they reigned victors in the U15 Pionier 7’s tournament. The team came up trumps after beating the hosts, Pionier in the U15 Cup final. Kearsney won the first pool match against Vryheid High School 33-14; beat Hoërskool Hoogenhout from Bethal 33-0; and won against Heidelberg Hoërskool in the Cup Quarter final 14-5. In the semi-final Kearsney beat Middelburg High School 28-5.

Hosts Pionier, also progressed to the final unbeaten. This match saw Kearsney playing their best rugby to date. The final score in the U15 Cup Final was Kearsney 43, Pionier 5.

In soccer news, Kearsney 1st team beat Michaelhouse 1st team, 2-1. The game started off in good tempo with both teams passing the ball accurately and trying to get midfield dominance. Luke Croshaw made good ground in the middle of the field and passed the ball to Luke de Vlieg on the left wing, who cut in and fired a neat left footer past the Michaelhouse goalkeeper for the opening goal. This proved to be the only goal of the half.

The second half was a bit of a dull affair with both teams struggling with the hot conditions. Kyle Koenig ran strongly down the right wing and crossed the ball into the 18 yard area; from where Graham Hudson spectacularly scored with a right foot volley.

Michaelhouse pressed, being two goals down, and were finally rewarded with a goal from their forward but it was too late. Good game management by the Kearsney midfield ensured a good 2-1 win.
