Budding golf enthusiast

Asher started playing golf when he was 18-months-old.

GRADE R Highbury Preparatory School pupil golf lover, Asher Hollister, has been chosen as the SPAR Star of the Month. At the age of six, he has already proven himself as a budding golfing enthusiast. Asher has recently returned, with his parents, from America where he participated in the ‘US Kids World Championships 2016’ held in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Last year he qualified for the event as the winner of the Junior Africa Golf Challenge 2015 at age five.

Asher has always had a love for golf, and has been playing since he was 18 months old. His dad, Glenn Hollister, is his main source of guidance and inspiration and the pair enjoy many hours of bonding time on the golf course, as caddie and player. Asher enjoys a weekly group golf session with other children who love the game held by Alf Hopf at the University driving range. Asher has a passion for many sports, grounding him well in all areas.

“His golfing inspirations are Louis Oosthuizen, Rory McIlroy (European PGA), Jordan Spieth (PGA),” said his dad. “We were so impressed with his resilience at the world championships. In his age group of six and under they played nine holes on three consecutive days. On the first day he shot 40 (four over par), on the second day he bounced back and shot 32 (four under par) and the third day he finished off on 35 (one under par), leaving his final score at 105 ( -1), one under par for the tournament. He finished tie fifth overall out of 86 children who met the international qualification requirements for the age group, which was a fantastic result,” explained his dad.

The next golfing event for Asher is the 2016 Junior Africa Challenge which takes place on Thursday, 29 August to Friday, 2 September at San Lameer. Highbury School wishes Asher all the best in the challenge.
