Gear up for gruelling triathlon
There is a R90 000 prize up for grabs for each of the four events.
THE SA triathlon athletes are abuzz with excitement ahead of the fast-approaching MiWay Midlands Ultra Triathlon, which includes the SA long distance Triathlon Championships on Sunday, 6 March at Midmar Dam.
Local KZN athlete, Donovan Van Gelder, who has numerous wins at Midmar, is looking for a win in the event but will have some tough competition from up-and-coming triathlete, Rudolf Naude. With R90 000 in prize money to win, the best of the best will be edging their way onto the starting line.
The ULTRA Triathlon Series has been running for seven years. Previously, the series was made up of three events in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and Sun City. It will now include a new fixture planned for Cape Town.
The series is a true test of willpower, endurance and the tough human spirit.
A highly popular series, the Ultra Triathlon events kickstart with the Midlands Ultra Triathlon in March, followed by the Sun City Ultra, scheduled for May, and the inaugural Cape Ultra in September. The last in the series will be the Midlands Ultra event in November.
At each fixture, the ultra event comprises a 1.9km swim, a 90km road cycle and a 21km run. It is complemented by a second sprint category, consisting of a 600m swim, a 20km cycle and 5km run – which provides an option for beginners and also for friends and family members to choose a more accessible event and be part of the action.
