Last ball triumph for Pinetown Cricket Club

Bruce Kerr, and Robbie Frylinck put together a telling fifth-wicket partnership that renewed Pinetown’s hopes.

PINETOWN Cricket Club’s first XI claimed a three-wicket win off the final delivery of their Castle Premier League thriller against Chatsworth Sporting at Lahee Park on Sunday, while the second side secured a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Delta at Forest Hills.

Batting first after winning the toss, Sporting’s innings got off to a sluggish start thanks to tight bowling from Pinetown’s bowlers and the loss of three early wickets.

A fourth wicket stand between Thandi Tshabalala (85) and Shiva Chauhan (54), however, got things back on track for the visitors as Pinetown’s men struggled to find a way through the pair’s defence.

The introduction of off-spinner, Nick Tatham (3/53), and a good spell of death bowling from Dylan Buckthorp (3/46) saw the game in the balance at the halfway stage as Sporting finished on 207 for eight.

Pinetown started steadily despite Sporting’s new ball pairing of Viyash Gobind and Rabian Engelbrecht making life tough early on, however the fall of three wickets in five deliveries pegged the hosts’ chase back once more.

Suncoast Dolphins Academy youngster, Bruce Kerr, and Sunfoil Dolphins all-rounder, Robbie Frylinck, put together a telling fifth-wicket partnership that renewed Pinetown’s hopes.

Despite the loss of Frylinck for a well-played 57 and the loss of two more untimely wickets, Kerr (52*) soldiered on to record his maiden half century of the season before he and Jordan Gregory scampered a single off the final delivery of the match to reach Pinetown’s target of 208.

The first and second sides will be in action on Sunday, 29 November against Chatsworth United at Lahee Park, and UKZN at Forest Hills respectively.
