Ethembeni cyclists conquer Amashova

A total of seven learners participated in the 40km fun ride.

ETHEMBENI School for the Physically Disabled and Visually Impaired competed in the Amashova Durban Classic for the fourth consecutive year with all their participants completing the race despite their disabilities.

Seven learners participated in the 40km fun ride – four partially sighted, one severely visually impaired on a tandem bike and two physically disabled learners on trailer bikes.

Charlene and Dwaine Stander from Concept Cyclery in Waterfall sponsored helmets from the Burry Stander Foundation and also serviced the bikes before the race and adapted a trailer bike so that Mthokozizi Ngema, who is a bilateral above elbow amputee, could participate.

Andrea Long from the Footprint Foundation organised team cycling shirts and volunteers, Shane Doyle, Sibani Makhanya, Matthew Volek and Luca van Greunen, assisted as well.

Kristyl Mackley, occupational therapist at the school, said, “This is so exciting for our school because it proves no one needs to be excluded on the basis of disability and that there are no limits.”

She added, “We want to thank the sponsors and those who helped for their time and for making the day a success.”
