Charities pay it forward at Amashova

The Tsogo Sun Amashova celebrates life and encourages cyclists of all kinds to put their foot to pedal and show their support as well as add to their circle of friends by giving to a special cause.

EVERY year, the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic supports a number of charities by encouraging cyclists entering any of the races to ride for a preferred charity.

More than 20 cyclists will be riding to raise funds and awareness for CROW in this year’s Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic on Sunday, 18 October.

With one of the most important features of the Tsogo Sun Amashova being that of cyclists’ safety, the team has secured full road closures for all events – 106km, 65km and 35km – on Sunday, October 18 and for the kids’ Minishova 5km and 1km ride on Saturday, October 17.

The 106km cycle starts at 7am, and the 65km and 35km at 5.30am.

The Wheels for CROW team will be headed up by Keagan Walker, an amateur, local cyclist from Pinetown who plans to complete the 65km race while riding in a full giraffe mascot suit.

“CROW does an amazing job at helping injured and orphaned wildlife, particularly at this time of the year when there are so many baby wildlife being hurt and orphaned. So a few months ago I decided to combine my passion for cycling and my desire to help animals by getting a bunch of friends together to ride and raise funds for CROW. Riding in the giraffe suit is going to be really tough but I know the support of the crowds on the day will help keep me going,” said Walker.

Walker has already successfully completed the 45km Tour of Durban Cycle Race in his eye-catching giraffe suit in April earlier this year. With the help of family and friends, he raised over R4 500 and is now hoping to raise R15 000 through the help of other local cyclists who would be willing to ride for CROW.

The main 106km cycle challenge starts from the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, the 65km Half Challenge starts from Drew Lane in Cato Ridge and the 35km Fun Ride starts from Old Main Road, Lillies Quarter in Hillcrest.

If you are interested in riding as part of the Wheels for CROW team, professional CROW cycle shirts are available to purchase from Keagan at R450 each. If you would like to make a donation and support Keagan’s campaign to raise funds for CROW you can do so via the CROW website – www.crowkzn.co.za – or call 031 462 1127.

All events finish at Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue) underneath the bridge which links the Mustering Fields and People’s Park in Durban, after which cyclists will go through to Suncoast for a first-class hospitality experience.
