Students rake in medals at JKA National Champs

Four students from Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy in Hillcrest were selected to compete in the first All African Shoto Cup Tournament to be held in Johannesburg at the end of September.

SHIN-Gi-Tai Karate Academy in Hillcrest took 14 students to Johannesburg for the South African JKA National Championships in June.

The championships were run over two days due to the number of entries, starting at 7am and finishing around 9pm.

During the championships there were selections for the South African JKA All African Cup Team to compete in the first All African Shoto Cup Tournament to be held in Johannesburg at the end of September.

The following students received medals: Zander Human, Elke Human, Hennie Dekker, Charles Young, Lauren Cooper, Nicole Berriman, Sensei Gareth Crowe, Rodene Dekker, Samantha Young, Adam Watson, Harley Cass and Justin Vella.

Those students who qualified for the team selection were Zander Human, Elke Human, Lauren Cooper and Sensei Gareth Crowe. Sensei Gareth won the men’s open kata division, bringing home the trophy and a first for the KZN area.
