Kloof netball coach goes international

Rinda McArthur will be coaching the SA U18 Mixed Netball Team that will be touring Brisbane, Australia, later this year.

KLOOF Senior Primary School’s sports coordinator, Rinda McArthur, is reaching to greater heights as she gears up to take her skills and passion for netball onto international courts.

The Everton mother of one, who has been coaching netball at KSP for the past 13 years, has been offered the position to coach the SA U18 mixed team that will be touring Brisbane, Australia in October this year. The dynamic life orientation teacher, who started playing the sport at the age of five, has since obtained a remarkable string of achievements which include representing and coaching various teams.

She achieved her SA Grade for action netball umpiring and in 2014 she managed the mixed U18 KZN team and was selected as the team manager for the South African men’s A-side for the World Cup 2014. McArthur, who also coached first team netball at Kloof High School, decided to broaden her horizons this year and started coaching for the beautiful Action Sports Arena in Pietermaritzburg.

“This year at the Junior Inter-Provincial Tournament, that was hosted by the Pietermaritzburg arena, I coached the U18 ladies’ team. We walked away as silver medal winners only losing to Western Province. This was probably the most rewarding win in all my coaching experience.”

At this Junior IPT tournament she was approached by the SA Indoor Netball Federation organisers and was offered the exciting position.

“It is even more of an honour that four players of my amazing Midlands U23 team will be joining me on this tour to Australia as they were selected for the U23 SA mixed team. It has always been my dream and goal to travel to Australia to coach for South Africa. I am excited and proud to represent my country at the next World Cup tournament.”

When asked about her ultimate goal in terms of promoting sport among the youth, McArthur said, “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing what a difference you can make in people’s lives through sport. This year I have been fortunate to have six out of my eight first team (U13) KSP netball players achieve provincial status for action netball. It was an honour to watch all six of them in their provincial colours.

“My goal for all my players as a coach is to ensure that they reach their full potential. Playing a team sport is a life skill. It teaches children and adults to win, lose and set goals physically and mentally for themselves that sometimes they themselves can’t believe when they achieve it. I know personally that sport has helped so many young adults get back on the right path again. It truly is a case of a healthy body equals a healthy mind. The more children and adults I can inspire to take part in sport, the fuller my own life becomes.”
