Saxon is an undefeated MMA champion

The one-minute monster, Saxon Delafield, will compete in his first professional MMA at the Extreme Fighting Championships (EFC) Africa at Carnival City in Johannesburg on 1 May.

SAXON Delafield, one of the youngest mixed martial arts fighters, has qualified for the Extreme Fighters Championships at Carnival City in Johannesburg.

He started kickboxing at the age of eight and was introduced to mixed martial arts by his father and coach, Mark Delafield, at age 15. He said the adrenalin rush and keeping fit developed his passion for the sport.

After Saxon turned 18, he won his first adult title, the South African Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (SAAMMA), but before that he held the U18 SA championship belt. He gave that title up to his opponent Marcel de Cruz to complete his matric year, and then requested a title shot match after his exams, which he won in 23 seconds.

Saxon’s most recent win was against Riyaad Pandy from Johannesburg at the Imbizo Civic Centre in Empangeni on Saturday 1 March. He won the fight in the first round in one minute and 32 seconds, after which he received the Africa Fight League title.

With 14 wins under his belt, 12 of which was under a minute, Saxon has been nicknamed ‘One Minute Monster’. He remains the undefeated champion. Saxon is now focusing on his next goal, when he competes in his first professional MMA fight at the Extreme Fighting Championships (EFC) Africa at Carnival City in Johannesburg on 1 May. It will be his first televised match. He will participate in a three-round fight of five minutes each.

Once that is over, Saxon till travel to Thailand to train there for two months, in the hopes of returning with better skills and work his way up to the championship belt.

I’m very excited and look forward to it. I am one of the youngest MMA fighters to compete at this level in this championship, and I’m sure it’s going to be a blast,” said Saxon.

Saxon has an intense training programme which comprises of up to six hours a day. He begins his morning with a boot camp class at his dad’s gym, The Zoo, at 5.30am, thereafter he does one hour of cardio in the evening, one hour of kick boxing and an hour of ju jitsu, with every alternate morning’s focus on cardio, an hour judo with current EFC champion, Armand de Bruyn and two hours of wrestling with former light weight EFC champion, Wentzel Nel.

He thanked his sponsor, Dineshan Pillay, owner of Goonch MMA fight wear and Iconn Clothing, trainers, training partners, family and friends for their continued support.
