WBHS dominate at interprovincial gala

WBHS dominated at the annual Interprovincial Gala.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School (WBHS) won the annual Interprovincial Gala on Friday 7 February.

The country’s top swimming schools travelled to WBHS to compete in the annual Interprovincial Gala.

Swimming spectators were treated to one of the most exciting boys’ interprovincial galas in recent memory.

Every race was closely contested and many races required playback technology to determine the winner.

WBHS won three of the five races in the freestyle events. Glenwood High School (GHS) dominated the breaststroke events, winning the U15, U16 and U17 races with WBHS winning the U14 race and St David’s High School (SDHS) the U19 race.

The hosts regained their composure in the backstroke, tying with GHS in the U14 race and winning three of the remaining four backstroke events, with Grey College (GC) picking up a win in the U15 event.

WBHS won two of the five events in the medley relays, but were beaten in the U14 race by GC, the U15 race by SDHS and were piped in the U17 event by Clifton College (CC).

The final event of the evening, the freestyle ladder relay was won by SDHS.

Although WBHS did lose some of the races, they emerged as the clear winners, accounting for 15 races.

GC left with five wins , GHS won four races, SDHS won three races and CC won one race.

On Tuesday, 4 February WBHS hosted the official opening of the school’s new aquatics centre, which boasts two swimming pools.

“We have been privileged to have many talented aquatic athletes as members of our school. Many of them have achieved international honours. It is therefore appropriate for us to upgrade our campus to further nurture the swimming and waterpolo talent in our school,” said Trevor Hall, the WBHS headmaster.

Chad Le Clos, a former WBHS pupil and a 2012 Olympic gold medallist, said “The new facilities are great. They will give the school an extra boost, especially in terms of upcoming talent.”
