Hockey team strikes it up

Kearsney Ladies and Men's hockey club celebrated its succesful season.

THE Kearsney hockey club recently celebrated another outstanding hockey season building on from its 2012 success.

Club Chairman, Samantha Marsden, was thrilled with the performance of the teams throughout the year and said, “This year the club can boast three SA senior players, five SA schools players, six KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Raiders players, two KZN Mynahs players and a staggering 30 KZN schools players. This is a wonderful achievement for these players and for us as a club. We are very proud of them and all our players, and we acknowledge their hard work and personal success”.

Once again the club had two teams being promoted into the next league with a third team narrowly missing promotion. The club’s 1st women’s and the men’s teams both took 3rd place in the 2013 hockey season.

Kelly Madsen, won the women’s club player of the year award and Geoff Abbott won the men’s club player of the year and most improved player award. Another auspicious award, the Mike Bonnet Memorial trophy for outstanding Service to the club, was shared Gail Shankland and Samantha Marsden.

The club is riding the crest of a wave as they have top players being coached by high level National and International coaches going into 2014. Marsden also said, “We want to thank our sponsors for 2013, Combined Motor Holdings Group (CMH), who gave our ladies SA player a car for the season. Without the generosity of sponsors like CMH, hockey would be a poorer sport.”
