Man sentenced to 10 years for pouring boiling oil on girlfriend

The woman sustained third degree burns on her face and upper body and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit.

THIRTY-seven-year-old Wilfred Mkhize was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder.

Mkhize was arrested in January 2017 after he poured boiling oil on his girlfriend in Clermont. He fled the scene immediately and was later arrested in KwaNdengezi.

According to Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, the 32-year-old victim was fast asleep in bed at her boyfriend’s house.  

“The room was dark and she was awoken by a bright light shining on her face. Standing over her was her boyfriend shining his cellphone torch on her face.

“She suddenly felt an unbearable heat over her face and upper body. Her boyfriend had heated oil on the stove and poured it over her face and upper body,” said Manqele.

“The woman was immediately rushed to RK Khan hospital with third degree burns on her face and upper body and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit for a lengthy period of time.”

Manqele added that the victim was scarred for life and still receives treatment for her injuries.

Acting eThekwini district commissioner, General Chirwa said, “Gender-based violence is a serious crime that is plaguing our communities and domestic violence should never be tolerated. I am pleased that the accused is put behind bars to serve his sentence.”
