Increase the speed limit on Inanda Road

Letter to the Editor - week ending 2 June 2021.

I REFER to the letter on 11 June 2021 in the Highway Mail regarding Inanda Road being a ‘danger zone’. I agree fully with sentiments expressed in the letter that the road has become a race track. I question the speed limit of 60km/h being imposed on such a marvellous piece of road.

In the 1970s, when it was just a single two-lane road with no sidewalks and very little fencing, the speed limit was 100km/h. When the Everton forest was removed in the late 70s or the early 80s, the speed limit was dropped to 80km/h. Fair enough, as there were many incidents on this road. But, when our new four-lane highway with pavements was finally completed, and with all the properties walled in/fenced in, someone decided to drop the speed limit to 60km/h.

It is actually now a safer piece of road than it ever was. These days, there have been virtually no wandering herds of cattle on the road as in the past to pose a danger. My suggestion to the authorities is to go back to the 80km/h speed restriction and then enforce it properly.

I have noticed that monitors have been placed on the road this week, with the attendant wires and grey boxes, and that the authorities are now monitoring the traffic flow/numbers, and presumably speeds, to arrive at a correct speed limit. Please make it 80km/h. Unfortunately, it is the driver that is dangerous, not the road.
