My Wave: This pandemic is cancelling the year

The coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown has forced many young people to change their plans and has events that they were looking forward to like graduation.

I SAW a really funny tweet the other day. It was a mock dialogue between the Twitter user and the coronavirus. It said: Me: Can I go out tonight, the virus responded by saying, “Owuyi lapho,” which is isiZulu for “you’re not going there.”

It’s good to see humour at a time like this. All this uncertainty is tough to take in.

The hardest part about this lockdown is the uncertainty that hangs over everyone’s future. Businesses are closing, the economy is constantly shifting and could see millions of citizens in dire straits, people will lose their place of safety and their long term plans will be cancelled.

One thing that I have been looking forward to for years now, is my graduation. To go up on that stage and seeing my parents clap for me is something I’ve longed for. I’m not the only one in this situation.

Even though we’ll still get the certificate, it’s still a very bittersweet thing. It’s hard to stay positive when your goals don’t manifest and it’s even harder not knowing when everything will be “normal” again – especially if you see that people in your own city are dying from this virus which could increase the chances of this lockdown being extended.

The longer this lockdown goes on for, the harder it will be to recover our plans for this year.

I’ve come to the acceptance that life will not be “normal” for the foreseeable future. It’s a hard pill to swallow, knowing that you have to reconcile with the world changing unexpectedly.

Everyone’s plans have been halted or completely cancelled and as hard as that is, we have no choice but to stay at home and to flatten the curve a bit and hopefully, like many things in life, this too will pass.

This pandemic is cancelling plans like visiting your introverted friend who never wants to hangout.

This is what Instagram users had to say on about the virus halting their plans:

Tsenolo Mohapi: My plans to graduate, plans for my business and my plans to attend Comic- Con have all been affected by the virus.

Lonwabo Tshalata: Our choir tour to Belgium and Italy has been cancelled

Kwenzeka Mavundla: I planned to be a serious student this year

Ryan Schutte: It hasn’t halted my varsity fortunately. Vega has been really responsive and set a good online platform. Vega offered a summer school opportunity in Germany at RheinMain University, with most expenses being paid for. I was keen to pursue that but that is certainly not going to happen.

Wanele Zungu: It’s cancelled a ton of my plans but it’s cool.

Sinead Van Eyssen: It’s cancelled my plans for Splashy

Michelle Thackray: I was meant to start my first full time job, to graduate and to go overseas for the first time.

Jordan Willis: My first year of university is ruined

Andile Thusi: It has ruined some plans for sure, 0nly partially though. Zoom enables for proposals etc. to be done on the app.

Prince Ndleleni: It’s affected my work greatly, a lot of music festivals have been postponed.

Chantel Creed: I’m literally in a foreign country and I’m jobless.

Chloe Dos Reis: My graduation

Siphiwo Hlengwa: I had to cancel plans on seeing friends in Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as my trip to Mozambique in June.
