Stop sneaking around to see partners during lockdown

Move in with your partners or learn to live apart during this lockdown. Couples cannot have it both ways.

THE Covid-19 lockdown has forced everyone to make sacrifices.

As hard as it’s been to not see my homies for this long, I understand that there is a bigger issue at hand. We’re dealing with a pandemic we’ve never had to deal with before as a generation – and this whole situation is unprecedented.

The sacrifices that we have to make include; not going to work, not seeing extended family and friends, putting some of our hobbies on hold and obviously not going out to do what we normally do on weekends.

A lot of South Africans have obeyed the lockdown rules and understand the severity of this pandemic, yet I still see young couples going to visit each other. Why?

I recently saw an Instagram story of this guy asking his followers if they could get his girlfriend from her residence to his.

My first thought was that he’s definitely not going to succeed because surely no one is stupid enough to do this? Surely people will be able to see through this guy’s selfishness? Well his next story was a picture of him and his girlfriend, captioned, “found my missing puzzle.”

Not only does this selfish behaviour undermine the lockdown regulations, it’s putting multiple people in danger.

We all want to see the people we love, these selfish couples aren’t alone in wanting to be with their loved ones, but there’s a much bigger picture here and it’s more important than your relationship.

Without trying to sound like a bitter single person, why is it so hard for some couples to live outside of their bubble?

I don’t remember the government allowing people to visit their loved-ones during the lockdown. This selfish behaviour shouldn’t surprise me. Suburbs don’t have a lot of police presence so it’s easy for people to change locations.

To slow down the spread of this virus, it’s best that couples just move in together during this period or deal with being apart.

Even if you feel healthy or fit – it’s completely ignorant to think you won’t catch the virus because you’re in a low-risk area.

We’re all struggling to get through this lockdown but people should maybe use this time apart from their partners as a test. The more people who move around, the longer we have to suffer and stay inside like disobedient school kids. Stay inside so we can, in the near future, all go out and play.
