My Wave: Drugs sparks violence in local nightlife

Drug use tends to entice violence in nightlife spaces, why can't we all have a good time?

GOING out in Durban really is a mixed bag.

I’ve been to all the relevent places in Westville (I jolled the ‘ville hard for the world cup final), so places like Wavy’s, WOB (Westville Old Boys) and the Jelapino Cove aren’t foreign to me. Rather surprisingly, I’m yet to see a serious altercation in any of those places. My Westville friends will probably scoff and laugh at me for saying this but I’ve only seen a few fisticuffs that side, that always end peacefully.

One altercation I saw there was between two of my mates. In all fairness to the boys, it was mostly words, no one landed up in hospital and it reeked of petty high school drama. In my suburb though, it’s a completely different ball game.

In the highway area, I go to the local pub regularly and I’ve seen some hilarious right hands being swung about for the dumbest reasons.

Toxic masculinity is brewed better than the beer at the pubs in my area. I don’t know what motivates people to fight on a night out in the first place?

Is it to prove their manhood (highly likely) or is it to relieve stress from internal traumas (listen guys it’s okay to cry or go to therapy) but the main reason that the boets, brauns and bikers find themselves been dragged out by bouncers is down to cocaine. The rich man skyf has the boys and the ballies acting violently more often than not.

As soon as you see a youngster with tight jeans and an obnoxious silver chain utter the words “Howzit my man,” you know he’s about to spend R500 (or more) of his allowance on a little banky or tiny plastic wrap on some a questionable white powder.

Mobi-Claw 911 securities recently reported on a call they received from one of their clients about a shootout on Saturday night at a Durban bar. It obviously escalated from a bar-fight. The lenghty report said. At first it seemed as if there were no injuries, then information filtered through that victims were being taken to a local hospital in private motor vehicles.” The report also said that,

“Preliminary investigations are pointing toward rival biker gangs involved in a drug turf war.” Drug turf-wars in the suburbs may sound ridiculous and surprising but the demand for drugs is ridiculously high!

Can I not enjoy a night out with the homies without coke-boys throwing hands and being humiliated by a much larger and inpatient bouncer?
