My wave: Exam season for Uni students

Good luck to all the students during this tough exam season!

AS exam season approaches, I’m constantly reminded as to how lucky I am that I don’t have to go through that horror ever again.

Even though my journalism course was mainly practicals, nothing would be more anxiety-inducing than a test. I can imagine how stressful an exam would be.

My social media timelines are filled with students who have either procrastinated on studying or are overwhelmed with the stress that comes with exams.

Although students go on social media to share memes or to joke around about exams – probably as a coping mechanisms for the stress – it’s important that students understand how to deal with this tricky but pivotal period at the conclusion of their academic year.

The Akeso Group, a group of private in-patient psychiatric hospitals belonging to the Netcare Group, has provided some healthy tips for students who are struggling to cope with the pressure of exams.

It highlights that: “There are many approaches to studying for exams and it may take some time to identify which study method suits you best. Once you have found an effective study method, stick to it and put in the time required to cover all the necessary material and importantly, make time for enjoyable activities to help you to maintain a healthier perspective.

“Plan your time to allow for much needed breaks as this will help to ensure that the time spent studying is optimised.”

The points made by the Akeso group are incredibly valid and I hope university students are managing their time correctly and looking after themselves.

Another thing that’s been trending on social media during exam season is: “exam care packages”. It’s basically loved-ones buying a compilation of treats for students that are writing exams. A lot of it features junk food, which could be counterproductive because stress-eating junk food isn’t the smartest thing to do during exams.

Students should be hydrating and eating healthy food and snacks to keep their minds alert and fresh.

Without trying to spoil the fun, include some healthier treats and no energy drinks in these exam care packages. Some of these care package treats look like Halloween trick-or-treat contributions.

Anyway, I did manage to chat to some students from three different institutions about how they’re managing their exams.

Natasha Rothman (Bcom Business Management) – I have worked out a timetable for when to study and which study units and chapters to cover and then inbetween all of this, I make sure to get out of the house. I don’t just sit in my room all day throughout exam time. I go out in the day and try to keep active.

Ross Ford (BCOM Strategic Management) – I think planning ahead is very important! Organising a good work schedule and sticking to it will help relieve stress and keep you on top of your work. I think the pressure of exams helps turn stress into motivation to succeed and pass!

Luyolo Mbatha (BA Digital Arts) – The major things I do to deal with the exam stress is to eat healthy food throughout the day. During my breaks, I get some fresh air and change my environment for a bit and lastly, join study groups which are a great way to judge where you are in your studies compared to your peers, even though the group can get side-tracked at times.
