Speed bumps needed

"The driver fled the scene of the accident which is a criminal offence, leaving my husband on the ground and injured."

ON Monday, 3 September, between 11am and 11.30am, my husband was taking his usual daily morning walk.

We live on Union Lane in a block of flats at the end of the road.

As he exited the complex and walked about 20 metres down the road, a taxi knocked him on the verge he was walking on.

As there are no proper pavements, the verge is the closest to keep safe from traffic. So this taxi had no business to come onto the verge.

The driver fled the scene of the accident which is a criminal offence, leaving my husband on the ground and injured.

A SAPS vehicle was cruising by while my husband was still on the ground, but whether they took notice or not, I have no idea, because they continued on their way.

He suffered a broken right arm and some cuts and bruises to his left side. He is currently recovering from an operation to fix the broken bone, after spending a few days in hospital.

I would like to make an urgent appeal to whoever is responsible and involved in the decision-making regarding traffic-calming justified on the grounds of pedestrian safety, to please consider speed humps for Union Lane.

The speeding taxis are a constant. They do not stop or slow down or move over for anyone or anything.

Vehicles entering and exiting their complexes have to be so careful to avoid serious collisions.

I will not even start to imagine if this was a child.

Since these taxis are allowed to drive through our residential neighbourhood then they should do so with regard for the law. There is no excuse for reckless driving and this must stop.
