Let’s get beyond skin colour

"There is clearly an orchestrated methodology by the eThekwini Municipality to target a certain segment of ratepayers, namely 'pensioners' and the elderly, from benefiting from the rates rebate."

LAST week’s letter from Dave Marshall makes interesting reading and most of his assertions and observations are borne out of the facts before all pensioners, myself included.

There is clearly an orchestrated methodology by the eThekwini Municipality to target a certain segment of ratepayers, namely ‘pensioners’ and the elderly, from benefiting from the rates rebate.

However, I am loath to support his one assertion that the eThekwini Municipality’s decision is based on “racist policies” – Mr Marshall is suggesting that our city lawmakers see ratepayers within the framework of skin colour.

As an elderly white male, I have come to a point in my life where I would rather err on seeing and expecting the best intentions from all citizens in our beautiful country made up of cultural diversity.

What we desperately need in South Africa today is the depth to see beyond the colour of our skins and accept that South Africa is a different and hugely better place than when I was growing up in a place of privilege.
