Monstrous display of wasted man-hours

"Surely this circus could be avoided by merely requesting payment (by post) of the renewal fee....payable by cheque (remember them?) and post?"

GLAD there were Good Samaritans to assist the retiree at the Mariannhill Motor Licensing Office, as mentioned in your Letters page last week.

I’m 78 and, sadly, unable to retire, and worse, I too had to visit the chaotic licensing office to renew my licence.

Aware of the absurd delay to be faced I took my place in an already established queue at 5.45am.

Believe it or not I finally exited at 4pm, exhausted and dispirited after more than 10 hours, mostly spent in blazing hot weather with precious little seating available.

Since the whole snail-paced procedure is no more than a money-grubbing device (the pathetic eye-test is certainly no guarantee of your driving ability) surely this circus could be avoided by merely requesting payment (by post) of the renewal fee….payable by cheque (remember them?) and post?

Otherwise this can only get worse, there were ominous rumblings of “unrest” during my ‘day out’ at Mariannhill watching a monstrous display of wasted man-hours this country can ill-afford.
