Pensioner outraged at exorbitant electricity bill

"They now say that I owe them R3500 over and above my normal monthly amount."

I HAVE just received my latest utility bill from the eThekwini Municipality and found to my dismay that they have reassessed my electricity usage over the last 16 months back to September, 2016.

They now say that I owe them R3 500 over and above my normal monthly amount.

As a pensioner I find it outrageous that I now have to pay a bill of over R7 500 this month.

I understand that something similar has happened to many users in the Westville area and wonder how many in other areas have also been affected.

I will be going to query my account this week but hold out very little hope of a proper explanation.

Is the municipality allowed to go back and reassess accounts like this, or has someone come up with another scheme to bleed more money out of their already beleaguered ratepayers?
